Crater Lake, Mount Mazama, Oregon

This lake is a caldera lake, which means it is formed in the crater of a volcano that has erupted or collapsed. With no water flowing in or out, the water has collected from rain over thousands of years. Crater Lake is actually the deepest lake in all of the Unites States at 1,943 feet (592 meters). It is also some of the clearest water in the world, with visibility underwater once measured to be 142 feet (43 meters). We thought, let’s snowshoe along the crater rim.

Eldorado Peak, North Cascades, Washington State

If you’re not scared don’t worry, I already was for you. We’ve been to the top, now we’re coming back down. The final approach to the summit is along this extremely exposed knife-edge which has points where a slip, if not roped up, would have equaled death. Eldorado Peak is known as The Queen of the Cascade River. Moment captured at 7:50am.

Marseille, France

Out on one of those islands in the distance is Château d'If. It is on the island of If and that is the Frioul Archipelago, just off the coast of Marseille. If you recognize that name, Château d'If, you’re probably right. This is the island fortress and prison in The Count of Monte Cristo. And Edmond Dantès definitely escaped, I went out there and could not find him. The photo is taken up on the hill above the city, where the cathedral Notre Dame de la Garde stands.

Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

This is the vegetation of the lower mountain, known as moorland. “Lower mountain” meaning 10,000 - 11,000 feet in elevation. (3,050 - 3,350 meters) Keep going up, and nothing grows. I did keep going up.

On the island of Mykonos, this row of buildings was originally fishing houses that line the waterfront with balconies that hang over the sea. This area is known as Little Venice.

This was night two on the mountain, staying at Shira Camp at 12,460 feet (3,800 meters). No where to camp except amongst the thin trees ,and then the fog rolls in.

After an incredibly beautiful day, we settle in for the night at Camp Muir. As sun down occurs, so does something else. The shadow of the mountain itself moves down its own slope, bringing in the night, with an extremely crisp shadow line. This moment was captured at 5:58pm

Jericho, West Bank, Palestine

How does 9,000 BC sound for the founding of a city? Jericho is thought to be the oldest continually inhabited city in the world. More than 20 successive settlements have been determined through archaeology. There is some dispute over the “continually inhabited” part, but it is still known to be the earliest walled city due to the dating of fortifications.

Morne Seychellois, Mahé, Seychelles.

A view from the top. Highest point in Seychelles at 2,969 ft (905 m). There is no official trail, but we made it to the top with a local, unofficial guide. He only takes one to two people a year and turns down most requests. It was pouring down rain for at least half the climb and not even the giant palm leaves could protect us during a break, so we just kept on moving.

At 4:45am we took another break and the horizon was really starting to glow, 5:15am light was emerging, 5:30am there was light sparkling off the snow beneath our feet, and at 5:35am it was confirmed, the sun had risen for the day!
